William Apgar

William “Bill” Apgar grew up with East Grand Lake as his backyard, learning its waters like a second language. In a town where everyone knows everyone, he’s the guy people trust to lead them to the best fishing spots, share a few laughs, and make sure they leave with more than just a great catch, they’ll have a great story for memories. Whether you’re after the thrill of fighting that big one or just want to soak in the peace of the lake, Bill makes every trip feel like time well spent. With him, you’re not just hiring a guide, you’re fishing with a friend who knows exactly where the best memories are waiting to be made.

Why Choose Bill

Every trip is more than just fishing—it’s about enjoying the sights, sounds, and serenity of Maine’s wilderness, with opportunities to spot wildlife and explore hidden gems along the way.

Traditional Style

Fish from the bow of my Scott canoe—based off the traditional grand laker of the area, designed for both big lakes and hidden coves. Add a shore lunch to complete your trip.

Passion for Fishing

Guiding isn’t just a job—it’s a way of life. Even when I’m not with clients, I’m out fishing, exploring, and refining my skills to provide the best experience possible.

Local Knowledge

Born and raised fishing these waters, I know the best spots, techniques, and seasonal patterns to give you the best chance at success.

Versatile Fishing Opportunities

From trolling deep lakes for salmon and lake trout, to casting in shallow coves and rocky shorelines, my trips offer a variety of fishing experiences suited to different techniques and species.

East Grand Lake Area

With countless lakes to explore, fishing opportunities are plentiful, from well-known waters like East Grand Lake to smaller, quieter spots that hold just as much action. There’s no shortage of places to drop a line. Each trip offers a new experience, with fresh waters to fish and plenty of chances to reel in something worth talking about.

Maine Guided Fishing FAQs – Everything You Need to Know Before Your Trip

East Grand Lake and the surrounding waters are home to some of the best fishing in Maine. On a guided trip with William Apgar, you’ll have the opportunity to catch Landlocked Atlantic Salmon, Small Mouth Bass, Lake Trout, White Perch, and more. Whether you’re after a hard-fighting smallmouth or the thrill of an aerial salmon, these lakes offer incredible fishing year-round.

Maine’s fishing season is incredible year-round, but the best time to fish East Grand Lake depends on what you’re after. Ice out – May Salmon are “up high” (May–June) offers excellent smallmouth bass action as they move into the shallows to spawn. Summer (July–August) provides steady bites and great weather. Fall (September) is the last best chance for catching salmon as the waters cool before winter sets in.

Yes, all anglers 16 years and older need a valid Maine fishing license to fish on East Grand Lake and other surrounding waters. Licenses can be purchased online through the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife or at local outfitters. A New Brunswick License opens more possibilities as this area has many boundary waters. If you’re unsure which license to get, William Apgar can help guide you through the process before your trip.

William Apgar provides top-quality fishing gear, tackle, and bait for all guided trips. However, we recommend bringing:
✅ A valid fishing license
✅ Weather-appropriate clothing (layers for cool mornings, rain gear if needed)
✅ Polarized sunglasses (to cut glare and spot fish more easily)
✅ A camera (to capture your big catch and the stunning Maine scenery)
✅ Lunch or upgrade your trip with a traditional guide’s shore lunch.

If you have a favorite rod and reel, feel free to bring it along! Everything else you need for a successful fishing trip will be provided.
